Singer Chris Brown filed a $500 million defamation case against Warner Bros. for alleging labelling him as a serial rapist and abuser in Investigation Discovery’s docuseries, Chris Brown: A History of Violence.
Chris Brown sues Warner Bros. over A History of Violence docuseries: ‘Full of Lies’
On Tuesday, January 21, Brown, via his lawyers, filed the complaint in California’s Superior Court for Los Angeles County. The 35-year-old Sensational singer criticised the October 2024 documentary series, which included several women stepping forward and discussing their purported interactions with Brown, in legal docs that PEOPLE was able to obtain.
Earlier a case was highlighted in which an accuser name Jane Doe, alleges Brown raped her in 2020. The R&B singer’s attorneys denied the claims in the documentary. It states, “This case is about the media putting their own profits over the truth. Knowing that it was full of lies and deception and violating journalistic principles.”
The lawsuit states that Brown has not ever been convicted of any sex crimes, however, the project paints him as a serial rapist and sexual abuser. Over the years, Brown’s attorneys say he has worked hard at redeeming his reputation.
He was accused of two felonies in 2009: assault and making criminal threats, after hitting his then-girlfriend Rihanna the previous month. On June 22, 2009, he entered a guilty plea and agreed to five years of probation, community service, and domestic violence counselling.
The lawsuit continues, “Mr. Brown has grown from those experiences, and his evolution speaks for itself. This new production ignores that growth, choosing instead to repackage stale accusations while amplifying them with demonstrable falsehoods.”
Brown is suing for allegedly causing emotional anguish, slander, and using his name and likeness for commercial gain. He is requesting a jury trial and damages of $500,000.
